We’re just over two short weeks from the start of the FBS college football season and you can feel the excitement beginning to build.

Unfortunately, that excitement was tempered a bit on Wednesday after news that one of the nation’s best players may not be able to see the field in 2022.

Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman, who threw for 4,228 yards and 39 touchdowns to lead the Demon Deacons to the ACC Championship Game, is out indefinitely with no indication of when he will return.

Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson issued the following statement on the Hartman news.

“Sam Hartman is the true embodiment of a leader and one of the finest you men I have ever had the pleasure to coach. As a two-time captain and coming off record-setting seasons in 2020 and 2021, Sam was intensely focused on the betterment of his teammates throughout the offseason and helping our program continue to achieve great things on the field. Additionally, he is a incredible person in the community and in the classroom. We’ll look forward to having Sam back on the field as soon as he can and in the meantime Sam and his family have the full support of our coaching staff and program in his recovery.”

Clawson did not give further details about the specifics of the condition. Though Hartman did issue a statement of his own.

“Tuesday was a frustrating day. But I am extremely grateful for our medical staff, and for Dr. Chris Miles and Niles Fleet for staying with me throughout this process. I look forward to attacking this rehabilitation process, and I am so appreciative of the support I have received from my family, teammates and coaches.”

Hartman Makes Fans With Story Of Mental Health Struggles

Hartman threw four interceptions in the 2020 Duke’s Mayo Ball. A game which Wake Forest lost to Wisconsin, 42-28. After struggling with anxiety and stress following the showing, former Rams QB John Wolford suggested Hartman try therapy.

ESPN college football reported David Hale then told the story of how the treatment has changed Hartman’s life, and how he continues to apply the lessons he learned on and off the field.

Hartman’s bravery made him a lot of fans who will now undoubtedly be rooting for him to make a fast, full recovery.
