This is a stunning move by Harden, who had an opportunity to pick up his option and be one of the highest-paid players in the NBA.
But, as Charania points out, he wants the 76ers to have more financial flexibility.

This massive move by Harden should give Philadelphia more room to work with once free agency begins.
James Harden Stuns Everybody By Declining $47 Million Option
Russell Westbrook picked up his option with the Los Angeles Lakers. Kyrie Irving also picked up his with the Brooklyn Nets.
But Harden decides to decline and give his team more cap space to work with in a stunning decision.
Of course, 76ers fans were thrilled with Harden’s decision.
James Harden is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.#Sixers https://t.co/lRMqtjOlk0

This is legacy altering. A guy who has been called selfish and that he doesn’t care about winning, just did the ultimate selfless move, he better get his flowers for it on local news AND national news.

Harden is making some steps to turn the narrative (and Philly fans) around. He will be a hero if he plays well this season and everything works out https://t.co/BuTQYduuXQ

James Harden has opted OUT of his 47.4 million dollar player option but intends to return to the team on a contract that will allow the Sixers to add multiple pieces to contend for a championship.
Thank you James.

**James Harden** being the guy that takes less money to help teambuild is going to send The Narrative into unprecedented disarray. Skip Bayless in hell. Stephen A has vertigo. Windhorst sigh-complaining to squirrels https://t.co/IZPdBkD8Zi

A lot of people owe James Harden an apology, man…
Dude pulled a @TomBrady by taking less money to give Philly flexibility to make the squad around him & Embiid better. He clearly wants to win & it needs to be talked about.
You're a real one @JHarden13 – Let's go win it all

What the 76ers decide to do now remains to be seen, but this is a step in the right direction. More than that, this is a massive surprise for somebody who has repeatedly been called selfish during his NBA career.
