Even A Historic 23-Run Red Sox Loss Couldn’t Get In The Way Of Love At Fenway Park

Love always wins.

The Boston Red Sox?

They win sometimes. But Friday night wasn’t one of those nights. The Sox didn’t just lose to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. They lost in historic fashion. The Jays pounded Boston for 29 hits and 28 runs in a ridiculous 28-5 blowout victory. The 28 runs allowed were the worst in team history and the 28-5 score was the second-largest margin of defeat. Only the 1923 Red Sox, who lost to Cleveland 27-3, can boast (?) that they lost worst.

Unsurprisingly, Boston fans were pretty unhappy with the performance.

Perhaps no play encapsulated the Red Sox misery than one by center fielder Jarren Duran in the top of the third inning.

Boston already trailed 6-0 when Raimel Tapia hit was should have been a fly ball to end the inning and leave the bases loaded. Instead, Duran loses track of the ball and it drops behind. That allowed all three runs to score. But then, Duran seems to refuse to run after the ball at Tapia scampers home for a Little League inside-the-park home run.

Duran said afterward that he didn’t chase the ball because he didn’t want to collide with left fielder Alex Verdugo, who didn’t seem to be anywhere near the play.

Okay then.

It Wasn’t All Bad For Red Sox Fans On Friday Night

While 99 percent of Red Sox fans in attendance were probably pretty miserable, one couple had a moment they’ll remember forever.

With the team trailing 25-3, one fan seized the opportunity for an in-game, on-scoreboard proposal. The massive loss must have set quite the mood because it appears the lucky lady said yes.

So the Red Sox may have taken a historic loss, but it’ll always be remembered as a historic win for these two lovebirds.

How can you not be romantic about baseball?
